Sunflower Rail-Trails Conservancy has received notice it has received a $306,375 grant from a Kansas private family foundation. The funds will be used to develop the Western Sky Trail which runs approximately 19 miles between Fredonia and Chanute. Work on the trail has started near Fredonia and will proceed to the north and east. The Western Sky Trail will provide opportunities for all ages to participate safely in healthy outdoor activities such as walking, running, bicycling, and horseback riding. The development of the Western Sky Trail will greatly enhance the connectivity of the Kansas rails-to-trails network now underway and it is anticipated it will become part of the Bicycle Route 76, Trans-America Bicycle Route, a 4,200-mile cross-country bicycle touring route.
